What Moon Phase Was I Born Under?

Updated: Oct 15, 2022

In Astrology, the Moon represents our emotional world. It's often the part of ourselves we rarely show to anyone else, the part that we keep secret.

The sign that the Moon was in on the day of our birth is the flavour of this emotional world, it offers insight to our feelings and why we react in certain ways.

However, it's not just the zodiac sign alone that can help us understand our inner world, the phase of the Moon you were born under can add even more to the bigger picture of your emotions.

How to find the Moon in your birth chart

First things first, you're going to need a copy of your birth chart. In order to get the most accurate chart possible you need 3 things. Your date of birth, your place of birth and the exact time of your birth.

You can then pop over to astro.com, click on Chart Drawing, Ascendant and then enter all of your birth details. You'll then have a copy of your chart that you can save, or print out that looks something like this.

Great, now you have your birth chart the next step is to identify the Moon, of all the symbols it's probably the most recognisable just by sight! We also have the handy key of the left hand side to help us out.

You see that big yellow circle on the outside of the chart, just on the inside of that is the planets, represented by their symbols.

The Moon is represented by a crescent moon shape that will be facing either left or right, depending on whether you were born during the waning phase of the moon or the waxing.

You may already know your Moon sign, but if not it's worth taking note of the zodiac sign next to the moon in the key (in the example if you read across from the Moon you'll see that their Moon sign is Leo). The Moon makes up part of what is known as the big three in astrology and is just as important as your sun sign!

Finding the moon phase you were born under

The next thing you need to do is divide your chart into quarters. We are going to be using the position of the Sun to do this. If you're here and reading this, I'm going to assume that you know your Sun sign, or star sign. It's the one we all tend to grow up knowing. Now we are going to find it in your chart.

Look for this symbol in your chart, the circle with a dot inside. This is your Sun, another of your big three.

From there we are going to draw a line through the chart to divide it into two equal halves.

A birth chart moves anti-clockwise, therefore the half on the left of your line is the waxing moon and the half on the right is the waning.

It will look something like this.

Now we need to add another line to make 4 equal quarters, to do this you can count through three symbols in the outer yellow circle, both to the left and right of the Sun and add a line through them like this.

Now we have our four quarters, we can look at where the moon sits within them. If it makes it easier you can number each quarter starting at the sun 1 through 4 anti clockwise, like this.

Now all you have to do is take a look back at where your Moon is, in this example it's in the section marked 2.

Let's take a look at your personal moon phase and what that means!

If your moon on the first line alongside the Sun

You were born under a New Moon. New Moon personalities are excited by the prospect of new adventures. You are creative and inventive and find that you deal with change well. You don't enjoy routine and prefer new challenges so you don't get too bored.

If your moon is in section 1, in between the first and second line

You were born under a Waxing Crescent Moon. Waxing Crescent Moon personalities thrive on being productive and constructive. You are ambitious and need to feel useful.

If your moon is on the second line to the left of the Sun

You were born under a First Quarter Moon. You are a doer and are very competent at any tasks that you undertake. You may find that you are restless often if there isn't enough to keep you occupied.

If your moon is in section 2, between the second and third line

You were born under a Waxing Gibbous Moon. You are a soothing and caring person, you like everyone around you to feel comforted and happy. You are the ultimate perfectionist, you need everything to be just right before you can call it complete.

If your moon is on the third line, opposite the Sun

You were born under a Full Moon. You may find that your thoughts are often rushed and jumbled, especially during a Full Moon. You can be prone to being a little oversensitive. You are also extremely sentimental.

If your moon is in section 3, between the third and second line

You were born under a Waning Gibbous Moon. You are thoughtful and love to sit an evaluate things to find the best outcomes or the lessons within situations. You are prone to making judgements so be mindful when it comes to that.

If your moon is on the fourth line, to the right of the Sun

You were born under a Last Quarter Moon. You are a very devoted person, when you are committed to someone or something you are completely faithful. You are also quite an emotional person.

If your moon is in section 4, between the fourth and first line

You were born under a Waning Crescent Moon. You are naturally a more solitary person who likes to spend time in quiet contemplation. You don't follow the crowd. You love to daydream!
